Compression release, how are they ported, to where do they exhaust the pressure? My homerlite XL123 has one, pretty sure it's stuck closed.

They vent right through the valve body itself. Stuck closed isn`t normally a problem, stuck open is.

Hi JohnL, not sure but I think the valve works mechanicaly on your XL. I have a Super EZE that works in conjunction with the throttle lock, it closes when the saw starts.

The 123 saws use a small pin in the side of the cylinder, above the muffler, held closed by a coil spring. A metal rod from the throttle lock opens it when you lock the trigger open. Decomp closes when you rev the saw up.

It should vent out of a small hole in the casting the pin goes into. I suppose carbon or corrosion could stick it.

Thanks to everyone. It is like you describe, the valve won't move, triggerlock moves a little then binds since the valve wont move. Being stuck closed shouldn't cause too much trouble though. Looks like it has worse problems... piston is scored.

How bad's the scoring? If it isn't too severe, you could get it going again with new rings after correcting whatever caused it in the first place. Probably can unstick the decomp with PB Blaster and heat on the aluminum.

If you decide to toss it, let me know. I need a couple parts for my VI-123.

I see what looks like brass colored scratches between wrist pin and single top ring, ring is about flush with the top of piston, which seems odd, would expect a ring land above it... might have to take it apart, main fear is if the case has to be split, sealing it back up afterward. Might have to bite the bullet and do it.
