firewood conveyor
I have around a 20ft-24ft conveyor I need to
put an electric motor on.
It's an old cord conveyor.
It's only about 12" wide, what h.p., motor do I need?
Will a cent., clutch help me at all?
I have seen a couple clutches that engage at 1,200 r.p.m.,
and one that engages at 1,700 r.p.m.,
I though the 1700 would be to high.
Thanks Scott

Hello Scott,
The last thing you need or want is a slip clutch
for a wood conveyor at any time.
You could use either a 1/2 horse or 3/4 horse
electric motor as the V belt and V Belt pulleys
will reduce the starting torque a huge amount.
What you actually need is to use are 2 V belt pulleys
properly sized to slow the electric motor down with the
smalle drive V belt pulley rotating the much larger driven
pulley. Any good farm shop or Graingers can sell you
the right size pulleys for this as you only want a very
low driven pulley speed of under one hundred feet
per minute to maintain the proper torque to drive the
head pulley or tail pulley drive set up with the elelctric
motor.
Edit: the Honda rngines with the reduction gear box are very
economical as far as purchase price and setting smaller pulleys
to deliver the rotary energy will be very easy as well as smaller
pulleys can be used.
