Well, it is -26C (-15F) here this morning and all of our baseboard heaters are still shut off. :)

There's a toasty warm fire in our wood stove and more than enough wood stacked to last us the winter.

The bush roads will be good and frozen now so I'm going to go out on a scouting trip and find an area for wood. A quick trip to the Conservation office on Monday to get a permit and next year's wood can start getting processed.

If I find some good stuff I'll fill up the truck. Usually I run across the same COs and they know that I am good for a permit so they will not ticket me if I take a load before getting my permit the following business day. If I run into a good supply I'll get at least 2 years ahead this winter - more if I can find the wood since I have a few spare acres for storage.

Yes, this thread is pretty much pointless, but I felt like posting up because it feels pretty good to have wood heat, see the heaters off, and know that I can start running my saws again.

Not at all pointless. You post here because we are a bunch of people who can understand the satisfaction that you have earned.Congratulations

:agree2: It's about 15 degrees here right now, too cold to run the saw, but I too am already thinking about next years wood and am itching to run some of my saws.

Mine rode in the back of the truck on the way out and started up without any problems. When it gets down to the -40 range I keep the saw in the truck, but otherwise it will start up rather easily.

Jeez that makes 20 sound warm. I guess I dont have it too bad.:)

It's all relative. If I hadn't grown up with these temps I'd probably talk myself into being cold just thinking about going out there! :D

I met up with a couple of logging outfits who were getting set up for the winter's cutting. I have known one of them since I was in my early teens and he will save me some good dry stuff once he is up and running. I give him some $ to help cover his fuel so it works out well for both of us.

Even better (for me), he dumps his saws when they break down (P&C-style break down) and when I asked if he would consider letting me have them he said that he would. The only one that they had out there was an older MS361, but it will be interesting to see what kind of saws that I end up with out of the deal. They run feller-bunchers mainly so it will not be a ton of saws, but even one will give me an opportunity to practice repairing saws.

( I cry when it gets to 40:cry: and I grew up in Buffalo NY. It was damn cold there and the storms:dizzy: )

Why is this post pointless......could turn out to a long post:dizzy: We have heat and can enjoy the winter. In all honesty, I really do miss the snow and tranquility, playing in it is FUN.......Working in it sucks tho:censored:

We are getting your cold...0F today with a north wind and 2" snow yesterday...more snow tomorrow and COLD tonight...they say -7F but with a clear sky and starting out at 0....it will probably get to -10F tonight at least...

Cold isn't bad...it is that wind that is ALWAYS blowing around here!

Pointless??? i think not...i guess we all understand, i can't wait for tomorow to run my saws but didn't have any wood left to cut, so called up some of the people i gave wood to and sure enough some of them big rounds aren't split...its gonna be lots of fun making noise and noodles at someone else's place! they think i'm nuts but useful, me thinks they are pretty much on the mark ... have fun, be safe! :greenchainsaw:

The satisfaction of heating your home with your own hard work is something that most don't get the opportunity to experience. We should be thankful.

Well said HD....your statement is pretty much a summary of what we all feel about this time of year. I flip on my spotlights every night and look out at my OWB and wood piles. I also know I won't have to drop a dime to the oil man this winter (about $6000 last year), and that is really great since I had to buy a new clothes dryer this afternoon and blew the tranny in my Jeep on the way home.....the OIL GODS are punishing me for my insolence.:dizzy:

-15f

Ouch! That's colder than a witch's brass... uhm... doorknobs. No way I'd be out in that. I guess someone has to live up there, might as well be you.. LOL
+33F here at the moment, that's cold enough. Supposed be +19F by morning. Brrrr!

Yes, I can certainly agree with that!

Well, the first part anyway. Sorry to hear about your dryer and tranny. That's a double shot that I wouldn't enjoy having to deal with.

LOL .... it's not too bad, really. After a week or two of -40 weather, -26 will seem like a warm spell. Besides, if it keeps cool long enough before we get any real snow then the ice will get thick and winter roads, snowmobile trails, etc will be good all winter. Too much snow early and everything wants to stay half-frozen .... it's no fun digging a machine out that's stuck in the slush.
