Does anyone know what kind of rope they are using in their cranes on the decks of the boats on the TV program Deadliest catch? It looks like a 12 strand hollow braid, but they were saying it is amazingly strong.

We are looking at going down to a 3/8" line on the chippers that ha a higher tensile strength and is tougher.

I am unsure who this rope is made by, any other suggestions as well for replacement rope in the chipper winch? Anyone using conventional rope? Meaning no outside jacket?

1/2 climbing line

is what we use on our Bandit 1590. that is, old, used up climbing lines. we have had the same line on there for about 3 months, it is some 1/2' blue streak, and use the winch and drag big stuff (up to 16" or so). we looked into the amsteel, but decided it was way too expensive. we have broken the tri-strand (i think it's called treemaster or something like that) twice now, but that was after like 6 months of heavy use.
save your money, use some old rope if available.

On the recent episode, (maybe last week) when the chowderhead jambed up the crane and snapped the line, I think the captain said it was "spectra" if that sounds right.

Spectra was it. Going to get a reel of 3/8" and try it out for the chipper, fit more line on this way too!

I will let everyone know how this experiment goes.

I hope it works out, we have been thinking of doing the same thing but didn't
no what to use or where to get it. Deadliest catch is a cool show.

OTG had mentioned you were thinking about changing the wire in your Cranes:yoyo: I thought...my god these mayer guys are losing their minds:biggrinbounce2:

Boston Bull, check out Yale's Maxibraid, or (as other's have said) Amsteel/Amsteel Blue.

Are you getting a full 600'?

Yes I am getting 600'.

Which will have the best abrasion resistance?

Amsteel Blue?

Endura 12?

Maxi Braid?

I know that the Endura 12 is $350 cheaper!

Great show! They make between 25-60 on average. BUT they basically live off that moeny for the rest of the year!
