Too bad red elm is getting so rare. I cut about 3 tons of it this year and wish I could find more. Dutch Elm disease dang near wiped it out in these parts. One of them was 75 years old. I noodle cut those rounds into fourths with my Stihl 046 Mag. Only then could I load the pieces onto my truck.
@MustangMike and I dropped a big red elm at a charity cut for the children's camp with his 046. Must have been 30" at the base. I came back and worked down to the fork with my 562 then 2186 in the trunk. Next time I'm out there I'll rent a splitter and turn it into firewood.
Today I found a truckload of red elm from a small farmer who said the tree was knocked down in June. It was standing dead for three years. Dry as a bone, it was a good find but a bear to split. Sometimes they split nicely and other times they are a gorilla.
