cut in boom 92 altec

I'm looking at a 1992 50ft platform altec lift on a ford f 700 chasiss. the top boom is round and has a cut clear through 1/4 of it from what seems to be a hand saw/ sawzall. Any idea why this would be done? is the top boom made of only fiberglass or is there steel in there too? Will this thing be able to pass cert?

No way I would fly that thing, the boom is all fiberglass.
I'm surprised none of the hoses are cut if it is 1/4 of the way through the boom?

Off the top of my head:
1. Sabotage from a competitor.
2. It’s an accidental cut. “oops!”
3. Maybe a mechanic/boom truck technician noticed something unsafe / unrepairable in the boom’s condition and didn’t want anyone using it until it was fixed so they purposely cut into it to make the issue more visible??.

Can this be fixwd or is it scrap? Any idea where I could find a replacement boom?

My best advice would be to call Altec, they should be able to tell you some of the history of them boom.

Also from what I have heard Altec will not sell you parts if the lift is more than 15 years old and has not been through a complete rebuild and if the lift is more than 25 years old they will not sell you parts period (manadory retirement).

I don't know where you could get a used upper boom but I'm pretty sure a new one would probably far exceed the value of the truck/lift.

When was the last time it was inspected?

You really need to be careful buying old abused lifts, you certainly don't want to end up like this guy!

I want to get it certed the last sticker was in 06 for a dieelectric test i will chat with altec thanks

altec is a first rate company to do business with if they built the truck there will be a file on it with insp history and any altec maint done , have the truck vin and or boom id when you call good luck jk
