While disasembling the saw to take care of the broken flywheel I pulled the cylinder to check condtion. Im a certified car mechanic and Im used to cylinders looking bright and shiny. This cylinder has no scoring but the cylinder looks to be silver with tiny tiny black dots. Im guessing this is a coating of some sort. If this is a coating then a cylinder that is bright and shiny would be worn more than one that is not. thanks some much for all the help. Im starting to get addicted to working on these things.

Thats what I thought, I want to make sure though. Don't want to take any coating off. its really weird, it not like regular shiny chrome. it has very small speckls of black mixed in it.

Can anyone verify if a 031av cylinder should be shiny like a mirror or does it have a special coating on it like nikelsil.

I'm looking at the 056 Super cylinder that I bought from klick'et, and I just had it honed. It's not a shiny mirror finish now, nor when I got it from him. I can see the chrome liner, but it's not polished-I don't reckon it would be. It's used and has had a set of metal rings banging up and down in it for the last decade.

Take care all,
Jeff
