I have someone that wants me to look at a dead cottonwood between two houses for removal. I haven't seen it yet, but I was told that it has lost its bark, and at least one good sized limb. I haven't had exp. with any dead cottonwoods before, but I have heard a few horror stories about them. What can you guys tell me about what to expect that is different than any other dead tree. Wood characteristics etc.. From what I have been told about this tree, I might just pass it up and let someone with more exp. get the job. I will at least look at it though. Thanks in advance for the help.

I deal with big dead cottonwoods often. They tend to be brittle, even larger limbs....I would'nt trust my weight on one as thick as as a mans thigh. Be very aware of the bark. The thick, alligator bark layer has a brown, papery inner layer that seperates in a heart beat, allowing the whole section of bark to come off, or even more fun, rotate on the trunk or limb. The wood itself is pretty light if its been standing dead for a while. If its between houses & you can reach, maybe you can reduce the upper branches while standing on a roof? I rent manlifts to tackle them otherwise. Play it safe.
