Am thinking about selling saws. Any tips about what too think about. I think I can give a good service to potensional costemer.

Retailing saws you would probably have to deal with a bunch of ignorant folks who know very little about product you are selling but only want the best service they can get. I believe there can be some profit in retail but you must have the patience of a saint to deal with the public. I have never sold saws before but spent a few years in the gas station / convienence store biz and you would be amazed what people expect for the money they spend. Had folks buy a six pack of beer, drink 3 cans in the parking lot and bring back the other 3 cans complaining it was flat and wanting a refund. Another lady screaming at the top of her lungs that the gas pump was defective and would not accept her credit card for payment, after I asked to see the card it was a public library card.
Good luck in retail, you will need it.:)

it´s not the consumer i am worried about. A few years ago I worked at a firm repairing powertowls and they closed acout of bad service from their manefactuer.
Proberbly a lot spelling foults.

Hey Mange, can you work on the saws, like tear them down, diagnose problems etc? If you can, then Im sure that there is a place for you somewhere. Are you going to be selling new saws strait from the company, or pre- owned(nice word for used) saws that have been reconditioned? Find out what the people over there are using, Stihl, Husky, w/e, and let us know about it.

knowledge of product..knowledge of
dealing with people,an good buisiness mind and plan..love u work..a small percentage of buisinesses starting say this yr.. will be around 5 yrs. later..
to most its just something to try, like say marriage.. if it dont work out ,jus get a devorce..this attitude ,while pretty good for day to day life,, is in my opinion the reason most buisinesses flunk out..
which by the way aint always a bad thing.. jmo

Around here were i live there is not many loggers, most is done with harvesters. But there is an expanding market for firewood, more and more Arborists, and park/ farmer use types.
All brands are represented exept Dolmar, and I have contacted them, they would like to give me dealership.
As for myself and my abilety to run shop, I don`t see any problems exept my bad back. I am a service person willing to please people, I am good at handel people face to face, and I have a great interest in saws. I am proberbly not the best mekanic araund, but i heve the interest to learn.

Hi Mange, you could do good if you attract the right clientel. You could start with selling and grinding chain and selling refurbished saws and even basic powertuning. If your yard is big enough you could also sell firewood. Try to get a Dolmar or Husky dealership and offer a discount for any trade ins that you can flip after fixing them. Your biggest pain will be the homeowner, but you can always say you're too busy and/or can't get the parts.
Good Luck,
John

Thanks for ideas. And John about selling wood, i do already, about 250 kubic meters/year. I by from woods and hire transport to the byer, this way it doesen`t go up and down the trucks more than once. Cutting/splitting the wood I used to do myself but now hired hands do this to. Most byers want 3m wood (ceeper) and do rest themself.
What is refurbished saws, is it like restored?

Thanks Mange

Thanks we will see how it turns out.
I will let you know when I do, things are a little messy Right now.

In a somewhat relate/unrelated way, there's something about your "handle" you should know.

I wondered if he knew about that as well, the meaning of mange in english I mean. As far as the dealer thing, I would love to see a dealer in my area that provided good friendly service. The one close to my house treated my like a leper. Of course I went to them for parts on a saw bought elsewhere. Another dealer about 40 miles away took the time to really help me out, and all I bought at that dealer was parts. Guess where I will go for a new saw?

Mange,
Yes, refurbished is the same as restored.

I'm the last guy you want to get advice from on running a business, but judging from my experience with Dolmar chain saws, you won't be swamped with service work. Keep some silicon handy to fix up those oil leaks. ...I bought my first Dolmar from a local dealer who only sells Husky now because no one knew the Dolmar name. Name recognition against Husqvarna and Stihl might require some creative advertising. You might also strike up a deal with Makita. Diversify a little, and offer your customers a choice between teal blue and red. Good Luck!

Well Glen, As far as my skin is conserned it is smoth as a babys ass..:D
And as for dealership, Well time will tell, if it`s gona be any saws sold in my garage, it will most likly be Dolmar, perhaps another completly unknown brand like those RedMax saws.
All of this is still very chaky.
Hopefully I have some news about this this fall, worst senario this winter.

I sure hope that clears up before the dealership opens.:D

Might be bad for business, but then again, some of the folks that use chainsaws for a living might have the same condition.

I sent a mail to Dan but I bet he gets a few.
Maby he reads this and sends a mail back.

Thanks for tip, Rich.
