Do you think that a faulty decomp valve caused all the problems with the piston? Seems odd. But I agree that a 340 likely does not need a decomp valve to allow you to start it.
Does not look like an air leak to me. Looks like it caught a ring. Was that ring in pieces when you pulled the piston? Looks like a lot of blow by, guessing saw needed a ring replaced from use. Do not see much scoring, but piston slap, yes.
