I have five 031s and zero 032 so not certain on some differences. The 032 has different handle and airbox cover. They might interchange, don't know. I believe Acres site indicates the 032 slightly larger bore and displacement. I have heard and read the 032 ignition and flywheel are different but no first hand info on that. I would expect that since the 032 was a later saw, more of them would be electronic.

The 031AV has improved Anti-Vibration mounts which help isolate the vibration of the saw. The 031 does not!

I just finished a 032av build, bought for 100 bones and replaced the ignition system, runs like a top!

I've got an 032 with the electronic ignition module. No spark, think it's the coil as there is no continuity on the secondary. What did you replace, where did you locate parts, any wrinkles in repairing it?
Thanks
Neil

I just built one and was researching all the differences. The 031 is the earliest followed by the 031av and then 031ave. All parts interchange afaik, but whole parts assemblies are a little different. The 031 has the model molded on top. The av and Ave have riveted model tags and optional chain brakes with the window in the clutch cover, but slightly different tank assemblies that have one piece floor plates, where the earlier model is hinged just behind the tank/carb cover. Earlier models use tillotson carbs, later have walbros. Earlier have the Stihl saw emblems on the recoil, later have the italicized STIHL emblem. Then of course there’s the early points ignition followed by the electronic, both with different flywheels. There were two types of mufflers too.

This list is not all inclusive, and I could certainly be wrong on a few points.

Mine has the Ave cover but Av tag, early recoil emblem, tillotson carb, chain brake guard but non chain brake clutch cover, and points ignition with flywheel that’s been converted to electronic.

Hi Niel,
My 032 av (early model, no brake) had the point Condenser system, so I gutted it and added an electronic ignition module. No issues so far with the oem coil. Wired it up and was back in business!

I followed harleys recommendation of using a longer bolt to replace the top coil bolt, and slapping the module onto the back of the bolt, near the intake gasket.

Best of luck,

I have the 030 031 and 032.Sport fury is pretty well spot on .the 030 I have has the red paint and minimum anti vibe 45 cc motor and revs lower than 031 or 032.i think the 030 was Stihls first shot at a light weight pro type saw.I doubt my 030 has 10 hours on it but you can see wear on the recoil hole.I got it for free with a recoil rope hanging out.The owner said you had to pull about 100 times and if you were lucky it might start he gave up on it in the early 70s.I put a gasket on the air filter carb intake it was warprd and the choke was not working.it is a 3 pulls cold start saw now I like it very much.
