I'm going to be cutting down a black walnut in about 2 weeks. The tree is only about 24" DBH. The owner said I can do whatever I want with the wood... the nearest mill is almost 2 hrs away, so obviously that's not worth the trouble. I've got a couple of other options though.

Some rich guy who lives about 25 min away from this location wants the log(s) from this tree. I told my contact to inform the rich guy that if he wants to come and get it himself, it's his for the taking... but if I have to deliver it, he's gonna have to pay.

What would you guys say is a fair amount to drop off the logs? There's gonna be maybe 3 or 4 at the most... I'll have a tractor there, but it doesn't have a front end loader, and I don't have a log truck or any kind of boom truck to use either.

As a note, when I say this guy is rich... I'm talking OLD money. Something R?

It's kind of funny... my contact told me that this guy has a LOT of money, but meanwhile rather than go and send people out to do the work for him... he'll do it himself. Apparently he's got a knucklehead of a tree guy who he does business with... my contact would like to get me that job. The knucklehead cuts down trees? and then the rich guy takes the logs, slabs them up himself with his mill(s) and has carpenters build furniture, or whatever it might be for his SUPER wealthy friends.

Any thoughts on the subject(s)?

Just shootin from the hip.

I assume that the homeowner wants the logs removed. He wouldn't care if you ate them, just get them off of the lawn. When you say 3 or 4 logs lets figure their 8'6" at least. @ 24" dbh those logs will weigh roughly 1100# each.

I got no equipment to move logs that size. The tractor will be nice a hi-lift jack can help if your a real MacGuyver. I'd bid that for $100 per hour from the first second I started to try and move them until they were off my trailer and in Richie Riches yard. You will be running your equip and paying someone to help you. It will seem like a lowball once you start wrestling those heavy SOB's.

Keep in mind the logs will yield 200 bf doyle each. Walnut can range from $100 to $2000+ mbf. Charge him for the wood too!

Don't forget to add a fuel surcharge, and a couple bucks for Advil.

The homeowner doesn't want the wood removed, he'd just as soon keep it. But he told me that if I have any use for it, I can take it. Actually I had told him to just call up this one guy with a woodmizer and have him come in to slab up the logs. The guy is a carpenter anyways.

When I heard that the rich guy wanted it though... that changed things.

The croch branches ( make good pitol grips & shot-gun & rifle stocks ). Try finding someone to buy the log for veneer, it might be saleable ! Thinking again. Maybe cut for lumber for cabinet makers or hobbyists ! Good luck.
