I have two deodar cedar trees in my back yard and love the trees. One of them was harmed by weed growth during a long period when I was away from the area. The weeds are now gone but the tree looks weak (pale green and thin growth). Is there something I can feed or do for this tree to help it back to full health?

for a start you can mulch the area round the bottom of the tree, couple inches thick to the dripline.

post a picture of it here. We have a decline syndrome with deodara that we don't know the cause of.

Mulch is good' spread some compost first. See Mulching in the link below.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the input. I have cleaned out the area around the tree and have added a good bed of mulch. Since we will be here without another long absence, hopefully, the tree will regain it's health.

I've never seen understory weeds cause a harm to deodar cedar, even when growing in field.

But, did you know that they are very susceptible to damage from herbicides like 2, 4-D - including drift from adjacent properties. Far more susceptible than most conifers.

Is that something that could have happened? Next door? Farm or residence weed control?

Any pre-emergent residue?

Possibility of any twine left under the soil surface around the trunk from planting?

I've even found twine in the trunk under the burlap and twine before - already embedded and inconspicuous.

Just a few ideas.
