Although i've been reading here on and off for a long long time, this is my first post...

I bought the below power head from a friend for $60.00 the other day and it runs perfectly. I'm wondering how it's different from a std. 55??? Does anyone have the specs of both saws??

I didn't get a bar/chain with it, but i'm thinking i'll put a 20" x 3/8 bar and chain on it. I still need to buy that...

Thanks for any help you may have,

Rob

Hi Rob, before you buy the bar and chain you'll need to check the drive sprocket...it may be .325 pitch. In that case you'll need a new 3/8 sprocket as well.:bang:

I'd buy a sprocket regardless, any sprocket on it is likely worn. Check and see if it uses a rim sprocket or spur, so you get the right style.

I do not believe the 'Rancher' name really signifies anythnig different on the saw, probably just a marketing thing. Similar to Stihl's 'Farm Boss' label for the 029-031-039 series.

The non-Rancher 55 is still on the market here in Norway.
It is adverticed at 2.5 kW max power output vs. the 2.4 of the Rancher.
Mufflers and carbs are different, and it may be slightly different porting (I really don't think so)

- but the hp difference may also be just marketing...

It's marketing.............and a decomp valve and .325 chain and maybe somethin else that's a minor difference.

My 55 Rancher is an '05 model and it has the 3/8 .050 - 72 chain with a 20" bar. It does good with a 20", but might do better with an 18". It will bog a little in certain woods.
