What is the main difference between a 170 and a 017 if there is any. I pulled an 017 apart today that only had one lobe on the crank and one piston ring. I also have a 170 that is apart. It has two lobes on the crank and two piston rings. Can anybody help me out here. Thanks.

OK thanks guys. Just playing with a bunch of spare parts my buddy dropped off. Might end up with a running saw.

they have been out since last march tell yer dealer to order ye one because the 170 has been discontinued

The 170 is $179, and their still is stock out there.
They sell very well in my area.
Im planning on buying another before they are all gone.
The only thing I've heard major failure wise is the carb.
A brand new one from Stihl is $30.

The MS171 is 20 to 30 dollars higher. Is it worth the price difference.?

Besides the MS170 doesn't have flippy caps.[emoji3]

the 171 has a adjustable carb and is strato charged as well i would rather have the 171 it also has a better air filter system on it.

what is wrong with flippy caps my pole pruner has them and i never had a problem with them.

I bought my MS 170 in 2006.
I believe it was $159.
Great little saw that gave me no troubles.
I might start a thread about why I bought it, soon. Don't want to sidetrack this thread.

I do see the advantages to better filtering, tho as long as I kept the filter clean it wasn't a problem.
A carb with more adjustment would be welcome.
I do need to replace the carb now, but I believe that is an ethanol issue, and my own stupid fault.

What I didn't like about the MS 171 was:
1)Higher price
2)A pound heavier
3)Same exact hp rating
4)Flippy caps

I talked to a local dealer that stocks the most Stihl equipment in my area.
Best selling Stihl chain saw for them is still the MS 170.
Id like to try both saws back to back, but I don't know anyone that owns a MS 171, to see it if there is any performance difference.

I think you have to have one break on you to really dislike them.
I studied a broken one and thought the plastic around the button was too thin.
A slight redesign could really improve the life of the caps.
