Different gaff placement on spurs?

Only if you want to stand on your toes all day. You want your gaffs inline with your shins as much as possible.
Ok, it just seems more comfortable while climbing if they were forward. But I see what you're saying. Thanks again jollylogger.
 
You're probably still hugging the tree a little, Scott. Most new climbers do. Ease your flipline out a little and they'll probably feel better. Less chance of kicking out, too.
I was for sure hugging the tree. I did gaff out once too. I'll work on relaxing and sitting back more.
 
We work in alot of cottonwood, aspen, birch and spruce. The thickest bark being the poplars. You think pole gaffs could hold into the poplars pretty well?

+1 on the pole gaffs for years.
 
Went about 30 feet up a spruce today, it went alot better. I relaxed more and trusted my flip line. I did hug the tree though, it had a lean and we were falling it so I just used the limbs to climb.
