This poor guy! He was so excited about this short piece of Myrtle log his friend had given him. Apparently his friend had kept this hunk of log under cover for years before giving it away. The new owner brought it to me to be milled for turning into bowls.

Even before the fist mill cut was finished, I could smell the cedar. Opps! He left disappointed but I now have a nice piece of cedar for carving. :)
 
Myrtle from the south is dense ,growth rings like a phone book . Big difference than ceder .

Different tree. Im guessing the op is referring to umbellularia californica, In Oregon its common name is oregon myrtle, in Washington it is often just called myrtle, in California it is called californin bay laurel or california laurl. being in the south you are probably refering to a true myrte. Another case of how common names can cause confusion.
