I finally tried this setup also, and have been using it for almost two months now. I like it more and more as I get used to it. I had purchased a Gibb's ascender last year and did not like it at all. Too heavy and I still needed two hands to adjust it so there was no distinct advantage over my old setup. I sold the Gibb's to a friend a month later for $25 less than I paid for it (expensive tryout).
Since switching to the distel on my homemade lanyard, I finally got rid of the last steel safety snap on my belt. I can't believe I used to climb with 3-4 steel safety snaps. Those things are heavy!

Here's a pic of a 4 over 1 distel XTC lanyard. Very smooth! I've also tried the same rope (10mm Beal Regate) on a 11mm dynamic rope lanyard. It works just fine.

t-900

Rich,
I picked up some t-900 from sailnet.com, what diameter are you using for your lanyard friction hitch and your climbing line friction hitch.? I bought 9mm / 3/8 and it seems a little thick for 4 over 1 distel. Right now i'm using a 4wrap 2 cross vt on my lanyard, which works very smooth.

I use a gibbs on my wirecore lanyard for removals and I like it , one hand adjustable. if you have anymore to get rid of I'll take them at that price.

Corey,
I tried the 3/8" T-900 and also found it too fat. Since the breaking strength is around 10K I ended up using it for short rigging slings. I've been using the 8mm Sta-Set from SailNet. The solid white is rated at 4400 lbs and hold up well. It was on sale last month for 22 cents per foot, regular price is about 29 cents. The Sta-Set is a bit softer than the T-900 and ties easier. The outer cover (which is the part you are using) is identical to the T-900. At about 77 cents per cord, I can throw them away without wincing if I want to burn one on a fast descent or if it gets gummed up with pine sap. I just bought 100' which should last me through the summer.

No more Gibb's ascenders for me. A distel hitch with micropulley on a biner is a lot lighter, cheaper and works smoother for me.

As of right now, I am using 6mm t-900. I know that this is rated at 4400 lbs., but it is my understanding that when used in a closed loop system the rating doubles. I've only used this on my lanyard for several weeks, but as far as I am concerned the gibbs is history except for my steelcore flipline on removals. On my climbing line I am using the 3/8 yellow tenex eye-in-eye that Sherrill sells. I use the Swaybisch hitch. I have several of the yellow tenex that I want to use up before buying more t-900.

thanks

Thanks for the feedback guys. i'v also been trying samsons xls in 3/8th. it seems to be the equivlent to new England's sta-set.
I'm sure i'll find a use for 10 ft of the t-900.

Corey
