I was looking at some new saws today for homeowner use. Not pros ok. Like the Husky 55, 350, 141. Troy-bilt, Poulan ,295, 260. Echo. Homelite. Just wondered if all new saws are using the plastic center cases? I came home and looked at my older poulans 3750 and 2000 and the have magnesium center cases. Will these new plastic center cases hold up I wonder. Whats other makes using for the center cases?

G'day.
Can't speak for most saws, but I got hold of a second hand husky 350 from a mates work very cheap. He said to me before hand that he could not see how a saw could be so stuffed in such a short period of time, as it had been dropped from trees, run over and very neglected. I even found the piston in the wrong way around. The muffler had been hanging off for ages and the exhaust had burnt a hole into the plastic oil tank, but not right through.
Anyway, I retired it a short while ago and dismantled it and found the plastic housing to be about the only thing on it worth keeping. Industrial plastic is nothing to be scared of I think.

Most 40 -45 cc saw now get the plastic case for the occasional owner>it seems to be pretty tough ,though i ve seen few cases deformed by heat causing air leak and bad running. If you do quite a bit of work ,go with a metal case, you wont make a mistake.

Even some of the larger displacement saws for farmers, arborist, orchards, week end firewood cutters, municipalities, state governments, forestry fire fighters, such as Stihl's MS 290, MS 310, MS 390, have gone to composite crankcases. Several of the saw & OPE tech's here will tell you they are good saws with excellent life spans with their lower price tags. Properly maintained they will work as well as magnesium cased models. The difference in price shows up at rebuild time. However for most users this could be as much as 20 years and more.

I never even noticed this stuff before, till I started hanging out at this sight and reading your post here. Just like to learn all I can for down the road. Thanks all for the help and inputs.

My Shindawa does not have a plastic case and its not heavy either!
What year though? My 2 poulans years 1994 and 2000 are mag cases themselves.
