Anyone know where I would find out if I need a license or certification to saw in Iowa and Tennessee? What else would be involved?

Thanks for the info,
Dave

You dont need a license or certification to run a chainsaw here in Iowa, just wear your ppe..as for doing arborist work and stuff like that i have no idea either but i would say its best to take classes on that type of stuff if you want to learn about it. What part ya from?

I live in Coralville...Iowa City region if you know the area.
My Uncle used to own a sawmill in Athens TN. I used to work over the summers with him when I was younger.....it was tough even at 17 years old.
I am just trying to make some extra money since my real job just got reduced in hours down to a 36 hour work week. I am an Architectural Designer and 3D Visualization artist.
I am amazed how much I remember from when I was a Teen sawing!!

Remeber the storms we had a week or so ago..? I have had quite a few neighbors ask me to cut up downed trees and I had to drop 2 large maples...both rotten of course. I am thinking of running an ad to the tune of saw for hire.

Like i said before.. dont forget the ppe. I wouldnt invest to much $$ into the job on newer equipment and try to use what ya got now as long as it works especially in this economy, but with this site a case of cad will set in and it'll start adding up. I dont run adds or advertise what i do. I work full time in a office and i only accept the jobs that i feel comfortable with since its just a hobby for me. No insurance so i dont do any takedowns if its a risk to property or buildings.

i dont know how it is where you are,but being uninsured myself,if there is any risk of property damage but they still want you to do the job,you can get them to produce a waiver clearing you of all responsibility, but you MUST have it notarized from a licensed notary, thats the only way to get around insurance that i know of

liscense? Insurance?

As sue happy as people are these days, I would be afraid to work without liability insurance. It is required in order for me to contract jobs, and at times I am glad it is. With the economy like it is now, there are alot of people working in situations where they could inflict damage to people or property, and have no insurance to cover it. I have subcontracted under folks before and got by that way. One of the worst parts though is I used to on occasion get requests to fall trees that were threatening structures or that people just wanted to have removed, now quite a few of them just pay Joe Blow $50 bucks, since he has no overhead and off they go.

yup joe blow, there is a video on you tube titled james the narcoleptic tree cutter, some of it could be staged but the guy tops a tree that rips out some wood off the stump and rips his hands with it i suspect, good entertainment

i would not even think about doing a job without insurance. i have a 2 million dollar gen liability for 837 a year. thats cheap considering if i get sued for something i could lose everything. jm2c
