Im ready to start rebuilding a ms310 cylinder. Now the acid part is worrying me as follows -
  1. if a drip of acid runs down the exhaust port will it be a problem?
  2. should I do some kind of cleaning before the acid?
  3. will baking soda and water neutralize any acid I apply it to?
after the acid treatment Ill hone it lightly
note: the contrast of the following photo has been exagerated(photoshopped) to make it easier to view ,by my eyes alone the cylinder looks ok
As always your feedback is invaluable and appreciated

Well, muriatic acid is nothing to be scared of. Looking at your cylinder, it sure doesn't look too bad. Looks as if the saw has been run really rich most of its life. A hone should clean it up, but using acid just means you need to hone for a shorter ammount of time...in my opinion, that is a good thing.

Check out THIS thread for more info on cylinder repair. Let us know if you have anymore detailed questions.

If you use acid definitely clean first; the oil in the bore stops the acid from being effective.

I clean with 4:1 diluted purple cleaner first, then after acid dunk it back into the cleaner to neutralize any acid left.

don't be afraid of the acid.

clean with warm soapy water.

pour some acid in a small container, like a plastic pop bottle top.

dab acid onto the cylinder with a q-tip. let it sit 30 minutes, repeat until no fizzies.

clean with lots of warm soapy water, and rinse generously with water.

Dude, like, be careful with the acid man. It's like, too much acid can be like a bad trip, maaan. But, wow maaan, the colors, orange and orange, and white, and red, and orange, and even blue....wow. (Think Tommy Chong)

Nice post, thanks for the pictures... did you pick up the special ring compressor for that series (ms290/ms310/ms390)? I didn't and it was a tough go on my 290.
