I am not sure - ideally some wider slabs - but there looks to be some boring infestation that is visible on both ends. But hard to tell the extent of the damage.

nice find.looks like cherry to me.(whats it smell like?)looks like you can still get some good wood from that.based on the shape of an oval,with the damage right in the middle,id cut from the nearer ends towards the bad stuff.

Black Cherry. Would definitely make some nice bowls. Might even be some real nice gunstock blanks in there!! If so, maybe big$$$!!

Yes it is black cherry. A good id trick is to look at the bark, if it looks like burnt corn facks ( yes the cereal) than its black cherry.
