Here's a video of 7 cuts...of my new 5100S Dolmar (Thank you, outdoortype) and the 16 month old one that is woods modded by Ed Heard. I have the pipe on it right now. Timing is a very close estimate from the video data.

In order, on the video, piped saw 4.0, stock saw 5.85, then two more, but close to a knot, piped 5.7, stock-8.15.

stock saw with ported muffler 7.9, piped 5.6 bogged a bit, and 5.5 higher revs.

Of note, my woods ported 3120 with a 36 inch bar cut that same ~15 inch spruce in about 3 seconds. (with worn .404 that Andy ground for me, and I touched up by hand till it was pretty darned sharp). The brand new 660 with a poorly filed chain was at about 5 seconds...36 inch bar. And in 26 inch spruce, the 3120 cut about 19 seconds, the 660, 31-32....

The piped saw is 16 months old, and was woods modded by Ed Heard. It is running 16 inch bar/3/8th chisel, half round ground and half square--I forgot to square file the first half--new chain just a bit dulled.

Stock saw is 16 inch bar, and .325 chisel, round filed.

This is not as precise as many folks do timing and testing..with a good solid log, and the same wood..no knots.

But what I deduced was that the stock 5100 is one fast saw, as I've always heard. What is interesting is that it didn't seem to cut much faster when I put the ported muffler on it. But I did neglect to richen the mixture...perhaps it was too lean.

Nice videos.

I just had my dealer order in a couple of fresh 5100s, One for me and one for a friend. Should be in today or tomorrow hopefully.

I really like the thin even cookies you are cutting. Shows control and doesn't waste wood. Good job.

A problem with any comparison is that the chain matters more than the saw when the saws are close. I guess the best chain for comparisons would be new stihl square off the reel.

Yup... These were both almost new chain. Cutters just needed touching up.

I should have done the test with the exact same chain...that'll be next time if I have an opportunity. And have both saws tuned optimally.

It doesn't make sense that the times with muffler mod only were similar to the bone stock times.

Sooner or later, I'll get around to having someone make me a race chain.

Also, the only time I compared the ehp saw running on pipe versus muffler was when it was new. The difference was small. As well, the ehp 346XP was very close. Recent tests showed the 5100 to be about 10% faster, both on muffler.

Typically, Dolmars run better out of the box, and Huskys exhibit larger gains when modded.
