Apparently there has been a recall issued regarding a potential flywheel failure on the PS6400 and PS7900. If the last five digits of the serial number found on the silver tag at the rear of the saw are between 40156-43009 for the PS7900 and 71998-79250 for the PS6400, the saws need to have the flywheel changed. If you sent in your warranty card, you should receive the detailed information for the recall in the mail. If not, I will post more detailed information as I find out. Dolmar_Tech_Mgr, maybe you could fill us in on the details as well.

Here's a copy of the Safety Recall

This is only for PS-6400 Serial # 71998-79250
PS-7900 Serial # 40156-43009

Wonder if this applies to the Makitas, and if the serial numbers would be the same?

pallis,

Give me the first 4 digits of your serial number, and I can tell you if you are in that range.

Okay, here is the entire number starting with the manufacture date. 031038122. I left out the 0310 because the book calls it the manufacture date. Sorry. Thanks!

Thanks cuttinscott! That's good news. Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Ben,
No changes to the oiler that I know of.

Brent,
The PS-7300's are identical except for the P&C, but there were none built with that flywheel.

I just swapped a suspect flywheel on a customer's PS7900 with a new flywheel I had in stock. There is quite a difference between them. The replacement flywheel has more reinforcing through the hub than the other flywheel. Makes me wonder if they were changed to the weaker design to shave weight, and then changed back because they were too weak. Sounds like the philosophy of a good machinist. Push it till the cutter breaks and then back it of just a little!

Okay, per a request. The first flywheel is on a PS-7300, of which there is no recall. I have a PS-6400 with an identical flywheel whose serial number fell out of the recalled range. The second flywheel is off from a PS-7900 whose serial number fell into the range of recalled saws. There are more differences on the inside of the flywheels as well.

Disclaimer: I cannot verify anything other than the difference between the flywheels I personally witnessed on these three different saws, so please use the serial numbers for final verification.

Or, the philosophy of the USDA. Allow just a little more rat feces in the tunafish, until too many get sick, and then back off a little. :p
