You schedule an estimate and drive to the the address, which is at the very limit of your service area, and there is already someone doing the work. This happened to me a couple weeks ago and I called the homeowner and acted and told the customer I couldn't make it there on time but I had driven by. I acted as if I hadn't seen the other people there and I gave her a price over the phone. I had some idea of the amount of work and I gave her a price that made her stammer. The job was probably a $3500.00 removal and I told her I would do it for $500.00 dollars. She said are you sure that is the right tree. I said yeah and described the tree to her. She didn't say a word for what seemed like 15 seconds. Then she stammered, "I already hired someone." I said, "Wow I guess you got a great price then. Oh well maybe next time. Thanks for considering us". I thought this was great. She seemed shocked and upset. I had to do it to her because this has happened to many times lately and it burns my rear end to schedule the appointment and drive all the way there only to find out that they only cared about price. I bet she won't do that ever again though.

Almost had Beer coming out my nose! That is awesome. You have to get that kind of call recorded next time and post up.

I had a call the other day to buy standing timber about as far out as I'll go. I wanted to call and have some fun with it, but I'm too busy.

I guess that is what comes with putting your number in yellowbook.

still laughing

I thought a little bit about that comment from tree co. I guess you would have to be ready for the response of, "oh well do you want to buy it still?" another step further you could say, "sure I'll come cut down the rest haul it away and pay you $3500.00 for it." She may going running outside to tell the tree crew to stop because someone is coming to finish the tree and give her $3500 for the tree removal and debris hauling. Could you imagine the look on their faces?

I got one the other week. Huge maple in a back yard 70% of the tree was all big cuts and let them fly, the rest was over what looked like a garage but it was an old chicken coupe. The whole time talking with the ho all he could say is that he wants to keep the building so i gave him a price of taking the tree down. He responded with yeah you are in the same price range of everyone else, i told him it is because of the building and all the work to avoid it. If you want the building gone i could give you a good price, but he said no. drove past it yesterday and the tree was down and so was the garage. I hate when you give a price for a job for a certain way because that's what they want and then they have it done the opposite way. Guess i should have figured out a price to take down the garage and gave him that in case.

You make me laugh, the customer has seemed to get more and more finicky about the price. Recently I have had several wasted trips close and far, given good prices, and been skunked. I love the reply, I can only imagine what went through her head... I do hope some of these under cutting dogs will go out of business soon and get the prices back up. :chainsawguy:
