I know many of you are not fond of this saw but I have one and have been very pleased with it except I need bigger and double dogs. Not exactly sure how to go about mounting them. If any of you would just so happen to have done it or have ideas please give me a hand.

There are many threads on this subject.
Do a search, and you'll find plenty of info and comments.
Also, Bailey's arborist supply has them in there on-line catalog.
Good chance they'll fit your saw.
Good luck!

so I am retarded. I didn't think the outside cover had holes for mouting of dogs but I was wrong it does but now where did you guys get the bots to bolt the dogs on at?
Jared Them blasted brain farts

I believe the bolts should be 5mm by 12mm long. Make sure to use locknuts and maybe a little loctite. The nuts should be on the outside of the clutch cover.

I like the 390 as well and I've wondered the same thing. Not much need for it in my case though, mine wears a bow most of the time. Still might be nice for the big stuiff when I put the straight bar back on. You can also post a question in Baileys' sponsored forum. Greg Grande is usually pretty helpful over there.

Not sure about the 390... but my 361 didn't have holes in the clutch cover, but the inside of it has bosses to drill out the holes in the correct spot. As well as bosses to accept hex head bolts to mount the outer dogs.

I'm not sure if the dawg/roller kit that I got for the 361 will fit the 390... but it showed right in the mounting instructions where to drill, and what sized drill bit to use.

I wouldn't even try to put an outside dog on a plastic side cover... Buy a side cover from an 026/036/044/066 etc if you want to do that.

Where do I go to find one of those? How expensive are they?
Jared

Stihl dealer - part number 1125 640 1701 - about $54 list.

often available on Ebay for half that. Some less well made aftermarket cover are available also -heavier (not mag alloy), sand cast... but they'll work.

Sell your plastic cover on Ebay - You'll get $20 or more for it.

you can make your own out of sheet metal.

use the mounting half side for a guide to scribe the outline then scribe the points to whatever size you want. cut it out w/ a jigsaw. then file the rough edges off. works for me

I actually have a large set of dogs on the out side of my 029, same side cover as your 390. As for mounting them up I went to the local hardware shop and got a stainless nut that fit perfectly inside the bar cover cut out, then got a matching stainless screw that did not protrude past the end of the nut, used a little locktite and never had a problem. I do not use this as a main felling saw. I only use this saw for cutting stumps off within an inch of the ground in large area I cleared and now bushhog. I dont like to use my better saws for this type of abuse. I was worried about the plastic cover not holding up and was real carefull at first but never had a problem and I work them now with no worries. Hope this helps
