dually vs single

Hey guys looking at picking up a 1 ton f350 or dodge 3500 over the winter. Just wonder you thoughts on dually vs single wheel. I'd be using it to tow a 12 foot dump trailer and eventually putting a dump box on it or a dump insert in it. Thanks for the feedback.

Go with duals, and on your next purchase there won't even be a question on what to go with.

It sounds like you may already have a few trucks spotted that you're interested in; however, here's a dual gmc with dump. I don't know anything about the truck. I just saw the thread and...then I saw your thread....yep.

I personally drive a ford one ton diesel single. It hauls greateriffic -- but i cant say I've personally pulled any dump trailers.

If you plan to use it in snow, single might be a better choice. Even if you have to jump up to 19.5" rims to find the right tire pattern and load rating, I think you'll be happier in the snow with only a single on the backside.
 
Hey Bearcreek, Are you saying that a GMC 2500 is on par as a 3500 for towing capacity and payload. I'd like to find a truck know more than 10 years old. A 2500 where I'm at has a better price point than a 3500, but I don't want to buy a truck and burn it out with heavy loads. Thanks
 
My F250 Single pulls and STOPS Everything I pull. (dump trailers, trailers, trailers, etc. I have pulled 24000 GVW (careful ratters) no great problem. (drops mileage a little). 'Course you need working trailer brakes. I did have a dually in Idaho, and thats good info on the snow. I ran Cooper tires and a load and had no problems. I do think the dually has 1 inch larger brakes, that might help in hilly country... PS I run 10 ply tires always

Im not really familiar with the stats on the GMs. I am very familiar with the Dodge's though, especially the 12 valve Cummins. On those, the 3500 4x4 and the 2500 4x4 are virtually identical accept for a few things to allow for the dual wheels. The frame, suspension, tranny and transfer case are exactly the same. The front rotors and the rear axle and brake drums are a bit different to allow for the dual wheels. The 2500's with auto tranny's use Dana 70's in the rear. 2500's with manuals use a single wheel version of the Dana 80. All 3500's have Dana 80's. The chassis cab version of the 3500 has a couple important differences in the suspension and rear axle that make it a bit heavier duty and easier to upfit. All the parts on these trucks are interchangeable, so you can essentially make a 2500 pickup into a 3500 pickup or chassis cab by switching out some parts. All that said, I would look for a 3500 chassis cab if I were you, unless you are primarily towing a gooseneck, in which case you would do fine with a 3500 pickup.

Got just the truck for you. 7.3dsl, dually with 12' dump bed and removable chip box. New dual 60" locking toolboxes to hold all your saws and rigging gear. Very well maintained and a great puller or hauler.

Flatbed has stake pockets should you want to remove the chip box and build up the sides with 2x12s.
