Im gonna pick up a dump trailer this week a 14 foot 14k GVW with the high sides. I was gonna take it to the local welder here and see if he can make me a removable lid for it so we could chip into it. Could pull a lot of chips behind a pickup truck so it seems petty appealing. Just wondering if someone ever did anything a little better than the regular 2x4's and plywood.

Might be easier to put a canvas top on it, we have them on our trucks to give us flexibility in what and how we load, works well.

I built the sides of my dump trailer up with 2x6 and steel tube and just use a heavy canvas army tarp for the lid if I need more chip capacity.

whether you tarp it or go with all steel make at least the back four foot removable i,ve bumped my chip box lid too many times with the skid loader gonna change it this winter if i slow down enough

Gonna go get it tomorrow and see what i can come up with. Main reason for doing this is land clearing it looks like we are gonna get a 18ft one with high sides 14k gvw. we can pull it in front of the chipper with a skid loader so we don't have to drive a truck up muddy terrain where it just cant go.

I have a 14' long dump trailer that is 12k. They are easy to overload especially a 18' long one. I chip into mine sometimes. Instead of putting a top on it, i just tilt the bed up a little. I also have a rolling mesh tarp i bought from northern tool that works really good if i dont want to tilt it up.

Sounds like you'll be way overloaded with that deal. My dump trailer is 16 foot, rated to 16K and I can overload it much quicker than I would have thought. In hindsight, it wasn't the best purchase.
