I was in to one of the local Husky dealers today hoping to peruse a 346 or 357 but they had no XP's at all. They did try to sell me a 353 though and said it had as much power and was much cheaper.Anyway, every saw they had in stock said etech on it and had the green gas cap.I understood from here that this meant it had a catalytic muffler. The mechanic said that he'd only ever seen one catalytic muffler and that was at a service school. He claimed that the green cap just meant that the saw met the epa standards for use in environmentally sensitive areas-which to me meant a catalytic muffler. Are there differences for different markets or am I just old and confused. Thanks,

AF

my 357XP's owners manual clearly states that if it has a green gas cap, that I need to run high octane fuel because it has a cat-muffler.

Typical dealer that is just blowing smoke up your azz. :deadhorse:

Most Husky parts have their # marked on them if the part is large enough to do so. The muffler is no exception. On the E-Tech muffler that came on my 359 it is stamped CAT on the top surface of the front portion. The actual part# is stamped below that. You have to look fairly close since the markings are not very prominent but they are there.

I myself would run premium fuel in any saw.

All the e-tech comes with green cap on fuel tank and cat muffler, no matter what your dealer says... and about the 353, its same saw as 346 with 0.1kw less and 1.5k revs less, but otherwise its the pretty much the same (xpect 6cc more)

The saw with the green cap DEFINATELY has a CAT.
Sounds like he just wanted to sell a saw. Shortsighted sales person. :bang:
If you want a 357, the 353 will fall short.
The 353 is pretty close to the 346 though.

If he is comparing the 346XP and the 353 he may be slightly correct. The 353 e-tech produces 3.3HP and the 346XP produces 3.4HP. The difference is that the 353 has got a more forgiving torque curve. The largest complaint that I hear about the 346XP is that it dies out quickly when it is loaded and needs to be used at or near top rpm where the 353 seems to be more forgiving when loaded.

As Musch stated the 357XP is in a totaly different category. The 357XP produces a full HP more @3.4HP but also weighs (catalog weight) 1Lb more. If you are looking for a 357XP don't let an ignorant dealer talk you out of it by trying to make false claims to sell you what he has got on the shelf.

If it has a green gas cap and says e-tech on the saw it has got a catalytic converter. You can also confirm the muffler as Urbicide stated it will have CAT stamped on the top of the muffler along with the part number. In Canada the 357XP's and 346XP's that we are currently getting from Husqvarna are not e-tech but the 353's are.
