The 044 I bought off of eBay came today. It was dark and my garage has poor lighting, so I only took one picture.

Sure, the saw is dirty, but at least there's plenty of compression. I'll edit this post with pictures of before and after I clean it up. I won't run it until I buy a new bar for it. See below for missing bar story.

Of course, the rough handlers at UPS couldn't let me be all smiles. The box had a tear in the corner, just large enough for the 24" bar to escape. The shipment was insured, so I'll buy a 24" Rollomatic ES from the local dealership and mail the receipt to the seller. UPS will reimburse the seller and then he'll reimburse me. Sometimes that sort of thing happens.

You are an optimist, aren't you...

Good luck with the saw... ;)

I've been through the UPS insurance thing before. I shipped something to somebody, and it looked like somebody bent the box across their knee. The buyer purchased a brand new item and sent me the receipt. I turned in the receipt with the claim and UPS reimbursed me. I reimbursed the buyer. No problem. I've talked to the seller several times on the phone. I don't see how this is going to be a big deal.

me too. just a little ribbing, that's all.... :hmm3grin2orange:

All the carriers break stuff. Happens to me all the time...

Last summer, I bought a cordless drill on ebay, the seller sent a sawzall by mistake. I got an empty box with a hole in the side. UPS driver and I got a laugh out of that one.

A couple months ago, I bought some stuff from Bailey's. FedEx delivered a box that looked like it got into a fight with Jackie Chan. FedEx even taped it all back together but not before all the files and other heavy stuff decided they didn't want to go to Pennsylvania...

I pulled the muffler cover today. Other than a slightly dark tint to the cylinder wall and piston, the P&C is in excellent condition. Absolutely ZERO scoring. This saw has some serious pop when you slowly pull the starter handle.

Just a wee bit of an upgrade from the Pioneer FarmSaw and Jonsered 525 I used to run.

Will you take the precaution of going through the carb, checking the fuel filter, fuel line, and clutch? Even on used saws advertised as running good I go ahead and run through those things for peace of mind.

Good post Jacob... Especially ebay saws... or when you don't know the seller that well. The 044 I bough came from someone I know and trust, so all I had to do was put fuel and bar oil in it and start cuttin'.

Have fun with your saw!:D

I had a Yamaha Home Theater in a Box sent to the office for a training a few years back. What arrived at the office was a "Home Theater in a sack". The box was so beat up that it had no structural integrity left, however the tape held...miraculously. Lots of damage internally, but the box had no "box shape" left, whatsoever. Literally, it had become a sack.

Looks like a decent saw. You should have seen the way Chopwood packed the 3120 I got from him. FedEx could have run over it with the truck and it would have been okay. Packed up with foam rubber, plastic wrap, and tape. It took me 15 minutes to find the saw in the packing. It was poultry in motion.

Here's a pic for Jacob J.
Also, are we (those of us in USA) not able to order the springs for the low and high adjustment screws, along with the standard (non-serrated) adjustment screws? See page 17 of the 044 IPL and look at Ref. ID 29, 30, and 31. My carb is outfitted with Ref. ID 32, 33, and 35 (limiter caps). It would be nice to trade them out.

Is the trigger pivot pin supposed to be even on both sides, or is it supposed to be sticking out slightly on the right, as mine is? I tried centering it with light pressure, with no such luck. I figured I better ask before convincing the pin it needs to move.

Would anybody happen to have an extra flange for the air filter base lying around? Mine is cracked all the way through, right up by the collar screw. See Ref. ID 17 & 18 on page 24 of the 044 IPL.

I also have a carb limiter cap question. Just because I want to know what the stock settings are, I'd like to know how many turns each screw is backed out, when the cap is placed on the screw. Obviously I've recorded where the screw settings were when the saw arrived, that way I can go back to square one during my tuning process.

I checked the mail today, and was happy to see an envelope containing an "Official Check" for $58.67 from the seller. I'm telling ya, it is so nice dealing with honest people. It's such a shame there are bad sellers on eBay, because it makes you wary of everybody. This person paid me for the replacement bar, even before UPS has completed the insurance claim.

Well, that's awfully nice of him. I'm glad it's worked out for ya'... The pessimist in me says to let us know when the check clears...

Seriously, I've had a lot of good ebay experiences as well. Bought a 260 a while back for $210 delivered. 170 lbs of compression, perfect C&P, 99%+ chain, perfect bar. It's been great in the manlift - much lighter than the 046 was... :rockn:

Yep, nice to know there are one or two good guys left!

BTW.. Smack that trigger pin back into place with a small hammer..

Yeah, I did that when I pulled my carb out a couple days ago to do the limiter screws.

I did an ugly muffler mod today. I figured I better do it before I ripped and quartered that eucalyptus. I'm assuming the can's rustiness is caused by heat due to the restriction of the small hole. I fattened up the H needle, and wow, that saw really goes.

The rust is just because it was wet... or lived in a humid climate. Nothing to do with the size of the hole. Bead blast it, paint it with a good quality muffler/stove paint, and it will be fine.

Nice pile of wood!
