Echo 400EVL---NEED IMPUT---not a pro,but need the heat

When i start my saw, it runs fine for about one tank of gas. Then after refueling, it cuts out like it's vapor-locked, or the stop switch is being turned on and off. I have tried different mix ratios with no luck. can anyone shed some light on the problem???

When it cuts out, check and see if you have spark. If not, go through and clean and re-tighten all the electrical leads. If that doesn't change anything you probably need new ignition components. Brace yourself for the price on those components ;)

Check you fuel tank vent. If it is plugged the saw will not run until there is enough pressure in the tank from expansion to allow fuel flow. I had this problem and the saw would run until too much vacuum would build up in the tank. It would run again when I opened the cap. The problem was the worst with a full tank. If that is not the problem, check your pump diaphram on the Carb. If it is on the stiff side, it is probably borderline for pumping. This would show up as the saw being hard to start as well.

When cold, the saw starts nice, then cuts like a demon till you shut it off, then it gags, like its loading up, but no matter how you adjust the carb, no change. It almost reminds me of a coil with a crak in it. Good cold, but then sporadick till it finaly quits altogether. let it set overnight, then it starts fine and cuts good till you need to refuel. then it's back to stuttering. I'll check spark next time it acts up. Can ya tell me the proper jet settings for this saw?

How many hours are on your saw? I've got a stock echo 4400 that has close to 200 hours on it. It was doing same as yours. If your saw has good compression, it likely needs a diaphragm/carb kit. Thats all mine needed! If you don't have good compression then check out cylinder/ring/chamber first. Good luck. HC

H-LL , I can't even tell ya how old the saw is. I'ld like to think my dad bought it new in the late sixties, or early seventies, and it has never had any work done to it other than plugs and guttin the muffler. It's a dam good saw, still has good power, but cuts out when warm. I'll try to find an ignition sys. before i do anything drastic. Thanks guys, for all the feed back.

Maybe the points are dirty and could use some cleaning. that might help, since you say its a cs400evl, which according to mikes site has points, that may be the problem.

Thats why we're here. we cost less than a saw shop by far. free help is the best kind.

Oldsaw, I checked Mike's site and he does have it listed as having points, which actually surprises me as I thought all the evls were electronic. But never had a 400 in my hands, so I guess I'll have to defer to what Mike says.

Jay, highly doubful that saw was purchased in the 60's or the 70's, maybe the 80's.
