After going down some internet rabbit holes, I think I'm going to try making a small table to hold metal pieces for drilling, grinding, etc. Some guys build it into their table, but I may make mine a little more versatile so it can be mounted in a 2" receiver tube, clamped to a drill press table, or used as a lifting device with an eye hook.

I did a proof of concept using a scrapyard transformer. I already knew this would work based on YouTube, but had to do it anyway. After I cut apart the transformer I connected it to the Jeep battery to test the magnetic force and it seems sufficient. I expect it will be a few hundred pounds force.

Apparently, a coil with ~1.0 ohms resistance is about right. Using a12v source, that would draw 12 amps. I think I may pick up a variable power supply to play with voltage/amperage anyway. (Edit for correctness and clarity): Only the larger wire primary coil secondary winding is used, the smaller wire secondary coil primary winding is thrown in the copper recycling. At least this is true for a common step down transformer where the voltage input is higher than the voltage output.

Here's the photos of my progress so far:20241020_192120.jpg20241020_163559.jpg20241020_163641.jpg20241020_163657.jpg20241020_165134.jpg20241020_165334.jpg20241020_170719.jpg
