I started milling elm slabs for a hardwood dealer this summer. After a lifetime of thinking elm was 'junk wood', I have been surprised at the rich color and how hard this elm is. It's actually pretty nice for live edge slabs.

100" long slabs against my solar kiln.

That's some nice stuff. I never cut anything I didn't like. Some are just nicer than others. Milling sure gives you a different perspective of the wood.

I milled up some elm a while ago also. Makes nice looking slabs indeed. It's not bad to cut with a powersaw, but other woodworking tools don't like it nearly as much. Here's some pics of my elm milling.

A beautiful wood

I milled up a 30" American elm 15 years ago and am using it now. My old delta planer hates it. The grain lifts some. If I had a helix head planer this would not be an issue

I bought a Shelix head for my DW735 because I started milling. You always get into some less than ideal wood and you need that spiral cutter head to get through the gnarliness. After Matthew, I salvaged a ton of Ipe from a dock that got ravaged. I was sure glad I was cutting with carbide when I was planning that stuff. Ipe is merciless on cutting tools.
