Had about 200 ash trees killed by the ash bore in 2008/2009 in my woods. I've left them standing and cut as I need fire wood, usally a seasons worth per cutting. Yesterday crusing thru the woods looking for a young hickory tree I could cut for a project I notcied thousands of knee high ash trees. Will the Ash bore strike again? at what stage of grouth will they attack? Where are the bores at now?

:D Al

Ash seed bank does not last long in the soil (1-2 years). What you are seeing now are seedlings from seeds that were dropped just before the parent's died. There are likely no more viable seeds in the soil. Once these trees are large enough to support an EAB infestation, they will almost certainly be killed. Somewhere between 1-2" in diameter (maybe just a little larger) is when that happens. You are looking at the last generation of ash you may ever see in that woods. :(

ATH speaks the truth. EAB is now and forever a part of our landscape. Are they killing like they were 4 or 5 years ago? No, the "wave" has passed from Michigan, due to greatly reduced food source (Ash!) but they are NOT gone and will continue to be a threshold pest for years to come. As far as where are they? Everywhere the Ash tree grows, Wisconsin, Minnesota (?), Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York (?), Maryland Ontario and I'm sure I missed some. Eradication was/is simply a dream...

Next up, Thousand Cankers of Walnut...
