Ash borers aren't gonna go away until they literally exhaust all of their food supply. They don't care where you are, they'll find the ash trees, and eat them all.

Well they better not touch the ash in your avatar. 'Cuz then I'll declare war.

Oh yeah, mine either!

Ah, that stinks. I know it is just a matter of time, and ours are already so damaged by the Ash Yellows, but I'll take all the time we have left. They'll all be gone soon.

People have say it has hit Maine but not sure :msp_unsure: Hope we don't get it for a while! We got some nice Ash trees here!

Well from what I have read so far it looks like they are going to quarantine New Haven county . Does anybody know if these quarantines actually accomplish anything ? It seems to me that other states have quarantines and it still seems to be spreading . I live right on the New Haven / Middlesex county line so I guess I will have to make sure the small amount of wood I sell stays in New Haven county . I feel bad for my friend who heats with wood and lives in Middlesex county but his woodlot is on Water Co. property in New Haven county . I guess if quarantines really did anything I would be all for them . But if they really don't accomplish anything then they are just a cause for unnecessary hardship and expense for people .

Missouri Also

Also confirmed in Missouri, about 400 miles away from me. Just a matter of time.

I guess we cannot find a bird that likes to eat these imported insects. They thus have no natural enemies. Perhaps it's all part of our global economy. :msp_wink:

Maybe closer to 200 miles, our county extension agent wrote an article in Sundays paper saying it was suspected just five miles east of K.C.

Traps?

Not good news at all. You have to wonder why more measures have not been taken to control it.

I wonder if traps could have been invented, similar to the Jap beetle traps that have worked rather well around here. My neighbor caught at least 100,000 Jap beetles that were ravishing his trees. Birds don't like them either. :msp_sad:

Yes, said news indeed, a mature ash tree is a pleasant and stately sight.
I have one growing in my back yard that's 30 years old, healthy as a horse. The spread must be 60' or more. Very colorful, it turns purple in the fall. Occasionaly the leaves will drop suddenly like a snow shower, all depending on weather conditions. Nothing will grow under it except hosta and perhaps lillies because the shade is so dense. Yes, it drops twigs, but I can live with that.

At age 25 it developed some strange growths on the perimeter that I learned later were normal. These eventually all turned dark brown and fell off after a couple of years and have never returned.

Well from what I have read so far it looks like they are going to quarantine New Haven county

DEP: Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station to Hold Public Hearing Concerning Establishment of Quarantine on New Haven County in Response to the Detection of Emerald Ash Borer in Connecticut
DEP: Emerald Ash Borer

Quarantine was imposed on all of New Haven County as of a couple days ago. I believe it covers removing all firewood and saw logs out of the county.

I hope the whole state doesn't get hit. 1/4 of my business is in Mass. Would be a real pain, though doable, to have to set up a separate operation over the border.

Great...did you see this gem Swamp Yankee:

http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/forestry/eab/firewoodtransportationselfcertifcation.pdf

I can't even figure out what that's for -- I can see requiring a commercial seller to keep a log of the dates & addresses he delivered wood, and to provide a receipt to the customer that includes the seller's name & phone number.

"Where'd you get this wood from?"

"I dunno, some dude from Craigslist dropped it off a year ago."

Those two page long honor system certificates kept by the guy hauling the wood sure are going to be useful

I saw that also and questioned its usefulness as well . I spent about a 1/2 hour on the phone with DEEP forestry people this morning and they had to put me on hold while they figured out who had to have that form . Basically anyone transporting firewood has to have that form filled out for each load . Even though I am in New Haven county and staying in New Haven county with my firewood I have to have one for each delivery . And this is for anyone .It doesn't matter if you are selling it or giving it to friends or family . I forgot to ask if I need one to bring wood from the woodlot to my home which is a mile and a half away . I probably do . Forestry told me that State Troopers , EnCon Police and DMV will be pulling people over who have a load of firewood . So you better have that form to show them . I just wonder how some of the oldtimers I know who don't have computers are even going to know about the form or get some .

Better start printing those out

I wonder if you're under the 25 cord a year commercial seller ceiling if this still applies. Also if the wood is trucked in, like I get it in a grapple truck load, do they have to furnish me a cert.

Well maybe the legislature can require the paper the certs are printed on be made from the pulp of EAB infested trees, At least they would create a market for those that can't sell forest products to other customers.
