Got this little Shindaiwa 377 powerhead in the mail today.
Previous owner said it would fire up, but not idle.
Well it did fire right up but would die as soon as it went to idle. It would refire easily on fast idle and go to full throttle as it should. 135 psi compression.
Pulled the EPA carb, gave it a sonic bath and new carb kit.

No improvement.
Tried another untested carb and couldn't get it to fire.

Found an old pre EPA carb off a 360 and just to see what would happen I put it in.

Saw immediately fired and went to a nice even idle.
Never put it to wood but seems to be running fine now. And a fully adjustable carb is just an improvement as far as I'm concerned.

I hate fixed hi and low speed needles, I want were I can set them to make the tool work. Almost bought a Echo straight shaft trimmer last year til I saw the fixed carb, left the place and went and bought a split boom Husky, it has adjustable needles. It was tuned slightly lean, after a few seconds it was running like a top. I talked my daughter into a curved shaft husky and I had to tune it also, can't tune nothing on fixed needles, so I'm with you. EPA will kill a good product.

It always amazes me that a 2smoke motor which is renowned for frequent carb "fiddling" for optimum running come with non or very limited adjustment carbs mixture wise the present trend towards requiring a dealer with an all singing /dancing computrized fruit machine fault finder that cannot fix the problem & tells you to bin the unit, is it me or are we heading back to the dark ages

While I much prefer a fully adjustable carb, I’m not sure the epa can take the blame on this one.

Plenty of blame to go around - congress, epa, Irresponsible consumers and business
Any good idea gets perverted for the sake of profit/power
Epa regs clean up Lake Michigan so it doesn’t catch fire but then those guys need to justify their jobs so they start looking for stuff to do....
Dipshittery abounds!!!
