Looks exactly like the alaskan small mill and their rail system also. Maybe if you click on the product is mentions its a alaskan didn't do that.

Actually it runs the new super extra micro chain on the new corresponding samurai sword paper thin (sorry can't resist) blade. The kerf is so thin it slices more than cuts, thus no saw dust.

That is the prettiest junk I have ever seen!!! A Tanaka saw? That must be the best that slave labor can buy!!!:greenchainsaw:

Why so? Tanaka actually makes pretty good saws, IMO.

43cc is small to mill with, but that has nothing to do with the quality of Tanaka saws, most of which are pro grade saws.

Not trying to be smart, but where are they made? I only said they were cheap because of the price, which I am coming to understand that you get what you pay for. I have also learned this the hard way. If they are selling a saw that cheap, I see it as a homeowner version, that is likely made in China, of something that is better. Quality used to be something that manufacturers took pride in, but now we have to deal with products that are not the quality they used to be. We live in a world built by the lowest bidder. Sorry if I offended anybody, was not my intention.

Mis-informed comment on my part, borderline ignorant. I misread the price, I should get a little more educated before I speak (or type).

They are most likely made in Japan, but I don't know for certain these days...so much made in China that even the Japanese have been taking manufacturing there themselves. But I think Tanaka still manufactures in Japan.

No, you didn't offend me, it's possible it is made in China, like I said above, but Tanaka is not known for producing junk, I think they are fairly well respected and do produce mostly pro quality saws, AFAIK.

43cc is way too small to mill with, no question about that.

EDIT: I think it is made in Japan, it says it's a professional mid range chainsaw, and has a walbro carb, with a chrome cylinder. Most of the Stihls have chrome cylinders I believe (maybe someone else will correct me if I'm wrong). Tanaka typically uses 2 rings on the piston also, as many pro saws are built. Here's a link to the web site. Yes, I found it in the manual on the Tanaka site, "Manufactured at: Chiba, Japan". Chiba is about 1.5 hour by train from Tokyo.

thanks for the input. I was a little fired up at the time I posted after just reading the Dolmar made in china thread posted in the chainsaw forum. I saw the name Tanaka and made a wrong assumption.

Jim,

That's exactly WHY I said I wasn't sure where it was made, at first. These days it's hard to tell, and the Dolmar thread was a bit disturbing to me, in that not just Dolmar but Husky and Stihl seem to be moving some of their operations to China as well.

I have a lot of experience with Japan, I lived there for 5 years, and my wife is Japanese. I can tell you that I favor Japanese product when I can, to try and help their economy...but as I mentioned I know too many manufacturers have moved production to China from Japan to stay competitive. This is a sad state of affairs.

Your comments were not taken wrongly by me, if anything it got me to find out where the 4501 is manufactured. And for all we know, that might be a Chinese clone in the picture!

There is a lesson to be learned from the Dolmar thread, but I have learned this from various other products I've purchased recently...that even though a product says "made in xxxxx", there could be parts that do come from China. As an example I was looking for computer fans not long ago...almost all of them were made in China. I told the sales person I would rather buy from any country except mainland China. It got down to only 2 types of fans, one was Thermaltake made in Taiwan, and the other was Zallman made in Korea. Since Zallman has a better name (for me at least) I went with them. Got home opened the pack which I saw had made in Korea stamped on the brackets at the store. After I take it out of the box, the fans had a sticker on them, "made in China". We can't win, I think we're destined to loose at this rate...it is just something we need to start accepting...:givebeer:

And worse, I might be working for a Chinese company soon...so I have to accept the fact that these people seem to be the only ones making money these days...
