Do you have to run a exhaust screen ?I was told that in some states you do some you don't. does it affect performance to not have one? I have a stihl 036

In some areas is required, in others it's not. Usually a good idea if your location has lots of dry brush, leaves, etc. The big problem with them is when they carbon up.

Hi Joe, running without your exhaust screen has the potential to make your saw run better. Whether or not you need to run it in Illinois I don`t know, but if you can give it a little cleaning every now and then you are safer to leave it in. Not much glamour in stomping out forest fires started by your saw. :D

I have run my saw with the screen in and out and was never able to see any difference. As Jokers also stated...keep the screen cleaned and you are good & safe to go.

Assume the screen material itself occupies 30% of the area covered by the screen.  If the area that's left open after that bit of math is the same or greater than the exhaust outlet area after the screen there should be no difference whatsoever whether the (clean) screen is in or out.  I'd leave it in and ensure it's clean.

Glens, I agree with the overall logic of your statement but what are the chances that the muffler`s exhaust outlet sans screen is even as large as the exhaust port on the cylinder? Not good because it`s not, but I still agree that the screen should be kept whenever possible.
