The company i work for is doing very well the last 3-5 years, but feel we have maxed out our growth potential in our community. We are roughly 30 minutes from the major city in our state, and are considering trying to expand services to this city. I was curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience to this and how it went for them.

I've know a feew that have done it, one through acquisition of another small company. The others by setting up branches.

A couple of the medium sized companies in our area have set up branches on other sides of the operating area.

One guy got cheap industrial parking near an interchange, paid the crew leader to commute and hired the labor locally.

Looking at your area, your "main branch" is 30 min from Saylorville, so that is the outer limit of that branch

A satellite branch could be set up near the 69/5 interchange (I'm looking at a map, it looks like a cloverleaf interchange), I-35/80 interchange, or I 35/5.

The biggest factors should be cost of the lease and proximity to high end communities since. What you are trying to do is cut the cost of the drive times to those profitable jobs.

Thanks for your input John. We were thinking of commuting until we get steady jobs at least. Maybe only send crews one or two days a week for a while.

I lived in Ames for a couple of years while going to grad school. Go Cyclones!

So, I take it you currently operate in the Ames area and looking to expand into the Des Moines area? Story Tree Service seemed to me to be the prominent tree service in the Ames area when I lived there. I saw there equipment everywhere. Are you by chance that tree service or are you a smaller service looking to become more like that one...?

If you're Story tree service, I can tell you, having nice looking equipment with advetising on it is effective. Keep it up.
