Hello. Looking for a quick cycle time gas splitter. This will be for normal home use. I have read here a bunch. Someone mentioned an Iron Oak that had an 8second cycle time. Speed is my main concern.
Could any members here enlighten myself or others of "quicker cycle time" units? I'd spend a little more if I didn't have to get grey hair waiting 14 or more seconds to cycle.
Thank you. Greg, Martinsville, IN

In order to get 10 second or less cycle times, in a splitter 4" or 5" bore 20 to 30 tons, you will have to get a splitter with a 22 GPM 2-stage pump.

If you go with a 3.5 " bore 16 ton splitter with a 16 GPM pump you will get about 8 second cycle time.

If you want a fast splitter then you need to get what I have. They are called GFX Super Splitters. It doesn't use hydraulics. It uses a flywheel system. This thing has a 2 1/2 second cycle time. This thing is fast and has split everything I have thrown at it(30inch elm). Mine was around $2800 that is the mid size one. You can get them with a gas engine or an electric motor. On a single tank of fuel this thing will split 2 full cords or more. that that is splitting it about 2/3 the size of a loaf of bread.

Welcome to the site. I am from Martinsville myself.. Well actually out by Cope.
I have a teenage son that does most of my splitting so speed is not of a concern safety is more of a concern. Fast equal less time to move that finger. Especially when two Boys are splitting together. We can cut and split about a rick an hour. This is tree tops not log pieces.

Do you have a picture of your splitter? Does it use a moving axe or a rotating drum ?

I don't have any pics of my personel splitter but here is the website for the splitters. www.supersplit.com Make sure you want to look. After you see it there is a good chance that you will want to buy one.

I have read on the Sears product reviews that their 27 ton 6.5 hp (B&S) has a cycle time of only 8 seconds. While I have not verified this, if it is true, that is pretty good, especially that this unit is on sale until fathers day for $1,100 (and NO shipping fee!!).

I was all set to buy the Northern tool 20 ton 5 hp splitter on sale now for only $799.00, however, the shipping to Arizona was almost $600.00!!

That sort of took the wind out of that sail!! I may look at the Sears unit as well as consider the tractor mounted ones.

BTW, does anyone know who actually builds the sears splitter?, I read somewhere that Huskee does, but for some reason I don't believe that.

I think that "craftsman" tools are actually made by Ryobi; I wonder if Ryobi makes their spliiter as well?

What's the hurry?

If this is "normal home use" then this doesn't make sense to me.
Unless the cycle time is absurdly slow....

I started out with a 6.5hp against a 13.5GPM pump driving a 5" cylinder. That combination was a little slow. It would split anything tossed in there.

Current setup is the same 5" cylinder with a 16GPM pump and a 15HP engine. Cycle time is better, but I gained production with a 3 way, or 4 way wedge system. It is fast enough, I can bust a cord an hour with it.

self clearing units?

is this a usefull feature? or rarely needed? I see northern tool has this feature on a couple units, but I really don't want to pay for shipping the thing. Thx, G

If you are referring to the stripper bars that come with some splitters. They come in handy on the 20 ton models as some of the blocks that are difficult to split may stop the wedge part way through. A stuck wedge can be a pain to remove.
