a logger very near here got killed, yesterday i think. rumor is he was attempting to fall a tree with another hung into it. i don't know if thats what really happened.

Hel I've done it doesn't mean I was real thrilled about it at the time, sometimes ya don't have much of a choice on how to get them down, and leaving em up is not an option in my book. I've also been asked to take care of some other yahoos mess... which is by far worse...

If done right and things are thought out before hand the dangers can be reduced, not removed, reduced, sharp calks and clear foot paths are a necessary thing though.

Happened to a couple young guys in their 20's recently here also ,way too young to go yet .

this guy was 44 so about a year older than me. however he was always a part time logger.......im sure never any formal training which i haven't had either.

once again, i will thank you guys for explaining to me how directional falling works.....i am much safer this way. not saying it could have saved this life......couldn't have hurt either.

me too Bob......i was younger and.........not afraid? not sure thats the way to describe? i don't do that now, nor domino fall unless theres no other way, and then i make sure i have a very good escape route.

thats two this year here, although the other was an auto accident. loggers are leaving here.

I think being young has a lot to do with it. When I was learning to fall there were definite rules on what not to do. When I was out on my own the first thing I did was see how many of those rules I could break and get away with it.
I was lucky, I scared the crap out of myself early on and my injuries were fairly minor.."hey, how 'bout that, those old farts that I learned from were right after all".
I've seen guys that got away with stuff that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. And they kept getting away with it...for a while. Too bad there's no do-overs in this business.

Yup, we all know how directional falling is supposed to work. Sometimes the trees play by different rules.

But, you're welcome.

Mike, I can't post a "like" to a post about a tragedy, but thank you for posting.

There is something about youthful thoughts of invincibility that it seems only age can alter. Experience helps but I think the collective experiences of age is the key. Wasn't too long ago several of us chastised (gently I thought) a promising young member for his cutting a supporting tree while standing under a hung tree. Unfortunately, I don't think he has posted since.

On the other hand, maybe that sense of invincibility is what helps one get out of the house and pursue a life of his own.

Ron
