this should bring up some happier thoughts as opposed to those nasty takedowns and what not. i like 2 types of jobs personally.
1) make the notch cuts. back cuts, tree falls, grab chain saw and leave. no ropes, once in a while wedges

2) is go into the trees and do whatever you have to do, get the stuff down, prefferably crash and burn, get out of the tree, coil up the ropes and leave. just make it so that the people can get by.

reason i say this is because i am finding that some of my larger accounts just have me go in and cut the trees / branches, get em off the road and then leave no chipping or other forms of cleanup

When you mention 'favorite jobs', one tree stands out in my mind. The prettiest tree I ever trimmed was a live oak growing up through a screened porch and towering over a 2 story house. This tree had a 120' spread and was about 80' tall. I spent 2 days in that tree fine pruning and moss removal, our debris was about 5 yards of chips and moss. If I ever find the photos I will post them. BTW, I wasn't didling around either. I was working for Davey Tree at the time and the job was for $3500. I had 2 other smaller oaks to trim on the same job and those took about 3 hours. I had about 11 hours in the big tree, 4 tie-offs to get all of it.
My other favorite jobs were any one of my 150 crane removals, especially back yard trees where we had to swing over the house. I love a challenge!!

I love crane jobs too. Especially when I can get the bucket in there to reach all the rigging and cutting. There's nothing better than cutting through a twenty inch diameter lead that weighs about 2 or 3 thousand pounds and have it just float away like a feather. Then just sit back and watch your crew cut and chip like crazy for five minutes while you hook up the next piece. It's good to be king! :D

Let's see. I liked

1) The come-in, drop-the-hard-ones-and-leave a hero with $

2) Those simple jobs that are just across the street from your setup- the ones that put $140 in your pocket and take 15 minutes, 15 minutes before lunch on a hot day.

3) Emergency help for the know-it-all handyman homeowner on a long weekend. (The one who manages to take a 24' hemlock that was leaning away from their $250,000 cedar cottage and end up with it completely cut and threatening to fall on said cottage). His wife will name her next born after me when I show up, and as I leave, insist that her husband give me a big tip on top of the bill that I just gave him (that I could barely keep a straight face about). Very true and memorable story. Hee Hee

4) The 5 minute goodwill stops as I price a job - better advertising that charging for.

Yeah, Treebeard that sound real good. I used to mow a yard for a strip club owner and he had a pool in his back yard. I thought I was mowing Hugh Hefners yard. Oh, and the mowing lines, well they were more like swerves. Definitely not straight. That job almost made me keep mowing, but I hated it that much. Oh and I forgot to mention that trimming wasnt good either. Goodbye flowers. Hello grapefruit!!!:D

We used to do some steady work for a couple of nudist resorts. Unfortunately, most of the people there were older retirees. Every time we did a job in there about twenty people would gather to watch us. I hated talking to them, I never knew where to look and I was always self-conscious about saying the wrong thing; you know like, false crotch, butt hitch, deadwood. :D

Just stumbled upon this old thread. Thought it was entertaining. Would anyone like to chime in? I can't say I have a favorite, I like variety. I will say fine pruning is not on my likes list.

Old? It's only 12 years old. Bet they will be surprised to get a response email 12 years later.

I'm on a mission now. Wife is working late nights now so I can get away with geeking out on the computer, or phone. I'm gonna start digging up some oldies but Goldie's. Only down side is I'm on the West Coast, so I have to wait untill the following day for the East Coast replies.

I have four cemetaries that I work in a few times a year and have always enjoyed working in them.

I can see where cemeteries would be great. Professional people, usually nice well kept grounds....and lots of them. http://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ftlogan.asp
This is where my grandfathers are buried. I think it would be a prideful thing to keep it looking nice!

Are you being facetious? If not I must ask why you like working in cemeteries?
No, I really do. Its always quiet and no one bothering ya and I seem to think of friends and family that have passed and remember the good times. Once in a while you will catch people doing stuff too.

Wow, treebeard, haven't heard that name in a long time! Best ones for me are virgin prunes. Being the first to break the cherry is always good for me. Trees with views a strong second.

Any job on or near the ocean !
