After a rope and gravity I'd say a Hobbs; very predictable. If you'd have said rigging device I'd have to say GRCS. It's like another groundie that doesn't take the day off.

Just bomb it baby.......damm straight

As far as port-o-wraps go, I only use those if we are taking out a limb on a tree that is not being removed, If it is a full removal I rely on friction created from double and triple crotch rigging and the appropriate number of wraps around the tree....Old School...but my favorite lowering device is definitely our 40 ton crane!

That is so "old school" I barely can remember those days. You better get another wrap this is a big'un is what I remember.

Port a Wrap, truck hitch or wraps around the tree. GRCS is out of my budget with this slow season. Port a Wrap is the best $125 you could ever spend in my opinion

Although I have not had the joy of using one I would say
a huey helicopter would be my favorite way just fly the
whole damp thing to the dump!!!!

Um....i deal with brush and all but with the Port a wrap you said if 125 dont you still need a sling???

what about one of these...anyone ever use them

The wraps would ride up on each other and bind, thats why they started installing all of those rope guides on the Hobbs. The $250 wouldn't be so important as the space that thing would take up in my truck. If i was going to devote that kind of storage to a tool it would have to be more usefull than i think that little capstan would be.

As for my favorite; while up in the tree i like a Mu"nter hitch off of a Kong, steel, triple-lock, fixed onto an adjustable sling.

On the ground i like the old port-a-wrap. Although i keep thinking about getting a Mk III.

The one on top is pretty similar to what i use. Very solid and once you get use to it you have total control of the pieces your lowering. Use it alot with a bull rope in another tree. I take some pretty big pieces this way. A friend of mine has a port a wrap and it seems to be a lot harder to set up. it also seems harder to take wraps with, but i have never used one just been in the tree.

I like to use a mini portawrap up in the tree.

I built mine and because I am a still quite little and buying gear as I need it I have not yet bought a GCRS but I love my lowering device like the one mentioned above. I have dropped some pretty big stuff into it and it works like a champ. I have a lot of pines that I removed form backyards so I drop pine tops into it all the time.

I am always looking for more efficient ways of working more easily.
Keep the ideas headed my way, oh great smart guys of AS.
