As the only mechanically inclined person with our company (having been a mechanic for 10yrs) I have sorta took the role of fixing our saws and equip. I'm just now starting to mess with saws as i was a heavy equip mech.
Anyone have any info on where to get oversized pistons and rings? Lower priced heads? And any info i can get on making a 346xp or 359 running better? I was given one to mess with that has been been used for parts but the head really isnt that bad off. it had right at 90psi compression but have been reading that a saw dont like to start if compression isnt around 110 or better. Also is there any chains that are better than the stock from Husq?
Thanks for any help!

Not sure about the Huskys, but you can't get oversized pistons for Stihls because the bores are Nikersil lined and can't be rebored.

You might want to get a small engine compression guage - you can't use the same one as for a car as it will read really low due to the volume of the air in the tube to the guage. If it is reading correctly, 90 psi is a dead saw, 110 is just as dead. A new saw will read about 145-160, maybe more depending on the model. At 130 they become difficult to start.

Most saws can be re-ringed atleast once. Break the glaze with a flap wheel or cylinder hone, very carefully, clean it up and put it back together.

Opening the muffler and re-adjusting the carb will make worlds of difference in those saws.

What chain are you running on the 346 and 359 now? The 346 is probably running 95vp which is actually a very good performing chain. The 359 can probably be fitted with something better.

will get the info on the chains tomorrow. On the muffler issue -do you mean taking the baffles out? Also on the carb issue I'm gonna adjust from the factory manual. And then see what i can do from there. I dont beleive this saw has been re-ringed yet but if it has the bore isnt in too bad of shape. Gonna order rings in a min and i have already run the hone. I need to get 1 size small bore gauge to be able to check the bore but on this saw im gonna have to skip it.I'm gonna eventually get everything to work on the saw's properly.(i hope)
