Hello all. I was wondering what all is involved in filing points. How is it done basically??? hehehe Thanks.

depends, points are coated like relay contacts to resist oxidation and arcing damage--dressing (filing) them distroys coating but will get you back running for a wile. a special point file is put between points in the gap several short strokes to restore electrical contact. sometimes metal will transfer on one or the outher contact producing a metal tit, caused by wrong capacitor. In this case its easier to remove points and dress with a stone.replace points when you have the time--frank

Folded over fine sand paper works better. All you are trying to do is remove the oxidation.

Points and sandpaper:

In my opinion, you want to be carefull with sandpaper when used on points. Some of the sanding grit could get lodged into the point surface and prevent the points from making good contact. Same with using a polishing stone. A fine file is best. I usually try to clean up the movable contact so that it has a flat surface. The other so that the surface, has just a slightly rounded surface. Then gap to correct gap.I also use to use carbon-tetrachloride, to clean the points ( used in fire extinguishers). But guess you can't get it any more. It would chemically clean the points, remove any oilly residue. The points seemed to last forever. I always put just a bit of white lube on the rubbing block for lubrication. Just some suggestions. Take care. Lewis.
