Went on vacation last week and stayed at the family's cottage. Took my climbing rope and did a recreational tree trim, well lift. Had a bunch of dead hangers/sucker branches and my aunt wanted to lift tree up so the roof would get plenty of sunshine. Took me 45 minutes to get the damn climb line in the tree. There were small sucker branches all the way up like on the tree to the right. Lots of tries to get the branch I wanted (big one going to the right towards top). Definitely need to have 2 throw bags for getting the line through the crap so it's on the trunk. Used a hand saw for all the cuts and was a good sense of accomplishment but found out how out of shape I really am. Hats off to you cats that do this all day everyday, gives me humbling respect. Anyway was going to do the tree to the right next day but that night was the dog bit incident so cut our stay short. Will get it next trip. Oh, climbed DRT on a blakes body thrusting. Can't seem to get the footlock down, just more practice.

two ropes is always good too. Would have been real easy to swing over the the second tree and trim your way back down if you had another line less work then two climbs.

Makes sense, I only have one line but thought I could jump over and get that one but was not easy to stay there. I understand what you mean. Guess I need to buy another climb line. Do you think it wouild be easier to use the same limb to get up then transition over to tree on right or just throw line in tree to right and cut my way up?

you dont necessarily need two climb ropes just tie in in a good spot with your lanyard undo your climb rope out of the tree your in set it in the next tree. if your real badass you can just swing over :msp_wink: or you can just use the tail of your line to slowly let your self over to the other tree...

true true only reason I say two lines is it allows you to set both from ground before you start and the transition is faster.

How are you setting your line, are you using a throw weight and line?

Yes, was trying baseball style but not enough arm. Did the underhand 1,2,3, and let her go with fairly good results but need practice. Bought TCIA's basic training for tree climbers dvd set and they had throw weights on both ends of the throw line and now I can see why.

Baseball style is difficult when you're trying to hit a target that's above you.

I do the under hand pendulum thing, most times I hit my target crotch by the 2nd or 3rd try, if I don't it's usually because I'm trying too hard to hit right in the crotch.

I've found that my accuracy improves if I aim for the bigger gap higher up the V rather than aiming right at the crotch.

Also, standing back away from the target so you get more of a horizontal shot at the target will yield better results than throwing from close up. Sorta like pitching horse shoes.

Thanks for the input, will try it out when I get back up there. May not be till Memorial day though.

Swyman, sounds like you need to get yourself a big shot (believe me you will love it) and get a pantin, will save you a ton of energy rather than body thrusting if your not comfortable with footlocking. Once you get some practise everything else will follow!

You definitely need at least 2 throwbags. I keep 4 and a spare line. It's always a blast to get both ends of your main throwline snagged and have to go fetch..

I definitely agree with deevo get a pantin and then a bigshot. It'll make you much more efficient. Practice with the hand toss though because you'll get heckled busting our the bigshot for a 30 ft toss. Rightfully so too! :)

Oh yes, have spare throw bags for sure! Like you said, they can and do get stuck in tight crotches or wrapped around the odd branch PITA! I break mine out for high or really tight shots, one of my climbers is amazing with just throwing, he hits shots that amaze me! Good kid.

Yes, and keep one throw bag tied to the other end of your throw line. It sucks when you hit that really high crotch, then watch the loose end of the line being dragged through it.
