well, i've been waiting for the opportunity to come along to score some free/reasonably priced walnut logs for awhile now and last week i finally picked some up. the main trunk was about 20"+ and about 12' long. i took as much as my handy new trailer could handle.
milling started awfully, as i was trying for a perfectly straight and level first cut (didn't happen). things kept breaking/coming loose/tipping over/etc. had to switch to the 066 as the 075 was having oiler problems (didn't investigate yet). then things started to get better. cut some really nice slabs, but there was more rot than i was hoping. i suppose that's why the tree was cut down. beggars and choosers, right? anyways, it was a good day but i wasn't able to get it all stacked (which bothers me). check it out:

i cut almost all of it at just over 9/4. i figured with shrinkage/resawing/planing that i could get two 4/4 boards out of each slab. there were some cool pieces out of the crotch section that i should've taken some better pics of. you can see against the fence. i was just too tired to snap photos at that point. ;)
this should keep me in walnut for awhile. til next time, cheers....

Good looking wood and you got a lot cut for having a bad day!

yep, i shouldn't have even said bad, it just didn't go as smoothly as i'd hoped. still though, gotta love a full day of milling. :)

+1,

Sometimes our minds envisage and I guess we all want to experience perfect milling days but I've given up on this and just go with what you can get.

Milling is a bit like fishing, compared to the day job, there are very few bad days of either

Yeah the common saying around here is that the worst day fishing is still better than a good day at work. I've had some pretty awful fishing trips full of misadventure before though that really put a challenge to that! Now, if I could only make it so that milling IS my dayjob...
