Firewood Question

I have a bunch of cut up Hazelnut trees that are about 12"long by 4" in diameter,I would like to burn them in the wood stove.Is there any harm in burning the stuff if it has some fungus growing on the bark.? Meaning health wise,or will it all go up the pipe anyway?Could I just knock the bark off and let it dry another year?

Never burnt any myself, so take this FWIW - but I wouldn't hesitate to burn it. Some of the punkier stuff I've burnt over the years has had every manner of mushroom, lichen, and fungus. All just burns.

If I am wrong in my hunch, I look forward to being enlightened by someone with any cautionary tales.

The fungus will burn fine. May want to store it outside for indoor air quaility issues.

I get dead wood with fungus from woods with little sunlight. After moving the wood to sunny location in yard,(couple weeks) the fungus drys and I have no problem burning it. If you have no sunny place to stack,I imagine it would take longer and need alot of airflow.

where there is fungus fruiting bodies which is what you are talking about I assume then there is decayed wet wood inside. No problem for burning or breathing but often this may be associated with carpenter ants so you again may want to keep it outside until burn time.

You fail to mention if anyone in your house is allergic to fungi or mold, but I do have mold allergies and have burned all manners of fungussed-up wood in an open fireplace before. If there have been any bad effects, I've never noticed them.

Hazelnut firewood

Thanks again Fellas for responding to my firewood question.Well I have needed to be burning that hazelnut wood for the last two day's as our natural gas furnace packed it in,and no issues I can speak of from burning it.It does not seem to throw a lot of heat but it is dry enough to burn for sure.Some heat is better than no heat,LOL!Most of the bark is falling off as I pick it up from the woodpile,so I gather it up and toss in.Those hazelnut trees are on my MIL's property and they send shoots up like wildfire around the base of the tree and need constant pruning to keep them in check.We really don't have much for hardwood in this part of the country,depending where you live in British Columbia you could be burning,Fir,Spruce,Pine,Alder,Vine Maple,Hemlock,Red Cedar,Aspen,Poplar,or mixes of all the above mentioned species.

found this thread while doing research on the web. just had a customer call and complain about the wood i delivered today. there is a type of white fungus growing on the ends of the wood and the customer is freaking out. he never said a word when he helped unload it. it is oak that has been cut split and stacked for over a year. never had a complaint in over 30 years of selling wood. he bought wood from me before with no problems. comments please.

I have that in some of the oak, it is a non issue to burn it. Ha! Snag some of my oakzilla pics and tell him that guy sez it is OK to burn.

Sounds like he's looking for free wood. I'd remind him that he helped you unload and didn't have a problem with it then.
