I would like to first off thank you guys for all of your help on my previous posts. I ended up following your advice on the "a pullin a poulan" thread and now am able to keep the thing running. I am also planning to purchase my own 'real' saw sometime in the next couple of months. But, for now I am looking to improve what I have. I was thinking of doing a muffler mod on the gutless Poulan PR3516 I currently have. I also plan to adjust the carb after the mod. I was also thinking of putting a smaller bar and chain on this thing.
It's currently running a 16" bar with Oregon S56 3/8" .050 chain.
I've found alot of articles here and there about modding saws but nothing really definative. I guess what I'm asking is, where do I begin?
I'll post pics of the muffler tomarrow evening for you guys to look at and see what you think.

Props to you for trying it yourself! The muffler is the first place to start looking for free horsepower. Search, if you haven't already, on 'muffler mod' and you will find days worth of reading. Just remember you don't need to go crazy - sometimes, less is more. Take your time, think things through, and be sure to adjust your carburetor afterwards - you will notice the gains! You had the right idea about upgrading your bar/chain - you will want a non-safety chain - your 16" bar should be just fine unless it is worn out - then you could justify downsizing to a 14"

Be sure to follow up on the results of your mod with pictures in this thread!

Josh , the P3516PR has the new type muffler that has the outlet on the front under the stud that holds the spark arrestor assembly . I have not seen a muffler mod thread for this style muffler .

Thanks for the link. That's exactly the same muffler as I have my saw. I searched and searched and couldn't find anything nearly that similar to what I have. Let alone exactly the same.
Out of curiosity, what the rule on muffler output size? I've read everything from an 80% to 120% exhaust port size increase.
