Next year am thinking of getting a new shelter wood furnace, so I was just wondering if a indoor furnace has to have a pad to set on??

I put my US furnace on a couple of bricks but ended up taking them out to make clearance to the ceiling. My basement isn't that high and there was distances to be maintained from the top of the loading door to the ceiling. I raised mine up thinking it would make loading and cleaning out easier.
I'm sure their web site lists any clearances that need to be maintained. Also depends on flooring type I would think.

Its going on a laminate floor. That's why I was thinking of a hearth pad
